Opening Hymn  LBW # 378“Amid the World’s Bleak Wilderness”   (sung by Pastor Bill Gies & Darlene Ramsey)

Salutation & Prayer    (delivered by Pastor Bill Wallace and responses by Lee Dobry)

Pastor Bill Wallace: The Lord be with you.

Lee Dobry: And also with you.

Pastor Bill Wallace: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

Lee Dobry: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Pastor Bill Wallace: Let us pray…Life-giving God, through the blessed gift and sacrament of Holy Baptism, you abide in us, even as we abide in you. Through this holy and mutual abiding, you give us life in Christ and strengthen and nurture our faith just as a vine gives life to its branches. Help us to grow in Christ so that we may be sent out to bear fruit for the life of the world, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Psalm               Psalm # 98                  (recited by Darlene Ramsey)

Sing to the Lord a new song. Tell of his mighty deeds throughout the earth, how he has not forgotten his people. God will come to set the earth right, to make all things new. God will establish righteousness in all the earth.

1Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. 2With his right hand and his holy arm has he won for himself the victory. 3The Lord has made known his victory; his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6Sing to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. 7With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy before the king, the Lord. 8Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, the lands and those who dwell therein. 9Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth. 10In righteousness shall he judge the world and the peoples with equity. (This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.)

Scripture Readings

Old Testament Reading from Deuteronomy 32:44-47                  (read by Lee Dobry)

Joint recitation of the song validated the transfer of authority from Moses to Joshua and validated the message of the song. The one true God ordained Joshua and inspired the words of the song.

44 Moses came and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and Joshua the son of Nun. 45 And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. 47 For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.” (This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.)

Gospel Reading from Mark 10:42-45                     (introduced by Lee Dobry and read by Pastor Bill Wallace)

(Lee Dobry): The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 10th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

(Pastor Bill Wallace): Jesus puts our welfare and needs before His own as He conducts His ministry, showing us what real leadership is. Jesus shows that those who lead in the kingdom of God serve others in humility. He leads by laying down His life as the sacrifice for our sins and calls us to similar sacrifice.

42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.)

Sermon                        (Pastor John)

Gospel Canticle  (sung by Pastor Bill Gies & Darlene Ramsey)

Nicene Creed  (lead and recited by Pastor Bill Wallace)

With the whole church, let us confess our faith: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the Church             (sung and responded by Pastor Bill Gies and Darlene Ramsey)

The Lord’s Prayer       (recited by Pastor Bill Wallace)

Let us pray together the prayer our Savior taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Evening Prayer         (recited by Pastor Bill Wallace)

Hear our petitions, O Lord, as we receive the forgiveness of sin through repentance, and salvation in Jesus Christ through faith, let us pray…Heavenly Father, we are silenced at the grave of Your Son, who knew no sin, yet was made sin for us. You permitted Him to die, exchanging His innocence for our guilt. In love He came to us, but He was rejected by hate. He taught us obedience, but men rebelled against Him.

We confess that a great mystery confronts us at this tomb of sin and death. He was buried behind the great seal of our sin and our death. By faith we know also that He who died is the One who unlocked the great secret of Your love. His tomb is our tomb. He carried with Him to the grave our sin and our death, that He might break their hold on us.

Trusting in the Lord’s promise that He would rise again on the third day, we come not to mourn Him but to confess the sin that He would leave buried. Have mercy on us, O God! Have mercy on us. Amen.

(Pastor Bill Wallace: Our closing hymn is LBW # 336 “Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me” in the LBW.)

Benediction & Dismissal        (lead by Pastor Bill Wallace and responses by Lee Dobry)

(Pastor Bill Wallace): The blessing of God Almighty, the wisdom and power of Christ Jesus, and the light of the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always.

(Lee Dobry): Amen.

(Pastor Bill Wallace):  Go in peace. Share the good news. Alleluia.

(Lee Dobry): Thanks be to God! Alleluia!
