Prelude                                               Mark Hurley

Welcome and Announcements           Pastor John

Gathering Hymn  Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” LBW # 543, vs 1 – 4

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation! Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near, Joining in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things is wondrously reigning And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining. Have you not seen All that is needful has been Sent by his gracious ordaining?

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew What the Almighty can do If with his love he befriend you.

Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen Sound from his people again. Gladly forever adore him!

Confession & Forgiveness                 (Pastor)

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who brings us out of captivity into freedom, out of the wilderness into the promised land, out of death into life. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another(silence is kept for reflection)

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. Through the Holy Spirit God cleanses us and gives us the power to proclaim the mighty acts of the one who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Greeting                                            (Pastor)

The immeasurable grace of Christ Jesus, the rich mercy of God, and the unity of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Kyrie                                                (Worship Assistant)

In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day                               (Pastor)

Let us pray…Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of your humble servants and stretch forth the right hand of your majesty to be our defense against all our enemies. Grant this, we pray, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16      (Worship Assistant)

God made a covenant promise with Abram in his old age, and changed his name to Abraham. The promise attached to this covenant was that Abraham would be the father of many nations and the covenant would last for all succeeding generations.

1When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” 3Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, 4“Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. 5No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 6I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. 7And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.”

15And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

Psalm: Psalm #22:22-30                     (Worship Assistant)

The psalmist proclaimed the steadfast love of God for the afflicted. Nothing goes unnoticed by the Lord, especially those who are in trouble or pain. The Lord never hides his face from those who need him. This is cause for praise and worship of the Lord Most High; it is fitting to tell all generations about his righteousness.

Praise the Lord, you that fear him; stand in awe of him, O offspring of Israel; all you of Jacob’s line, give glory.

For he does not despise nor abhor the poor in their poverty; neither does he hide his face from them; but when they cry to him he hears them.

My praise is of him in the great assembly; I will perform my vows in the presence of those who worship him.

The poor shall eat and be satisfied, and those who seek the Lord shall praise him: “May your heart live forever!”

All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall bow before him.

For kingship belongs to the Lord; he rules over the nations.

To him alone all who sleep in the earth bow down in worship; all who go down to the dust fall before him.

My soul shall live for him; my descendants shall serve him; they shall be known as the Lord’s forever.

They shall come and make known to a people yet unborn the saving deeds that he has done.

Second Reading: Romans 5:1-11        (Worship Assistant)

Paul explained to the Roman church that through the blood of Christ, those who believe have been made right with God and will live in peace with him. Because of this good news, we stand in faith, knowing that God’s grace has been poured upon us through the sacrificial love of Christ, who died so that we might live.

1Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person — though perhaps for a good person  one would dare even to die — 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. This is the Word of God, word of life, thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel: Mark 8:27-38                (Pastor)

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 8th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus asked his disciples who others think he is, and their answers included John the Baptist, Elijah or even another prophet. Jesus was more concerned with who the disciples thought he was, so he asked them the question. Peter stepped forward, confessing that Jesus is the Christ; but then just as quickly balked when Jesus explained that he must suffer, die, and on the third day rise again.

27Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. 31And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But turning and seeing his  disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” 34And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” This is the gospel of the Lord, praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon                                             Pastor John

Hymn of the Day  Beautiful Savior”       LBW # 518, vs 1 – 4

Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man! Truly I'd love Thee, Truly I'd serve thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands, Robed in flow'rs of blooming spring; Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes our sorrowing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight, Bright the sparkling stars on high; Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, Praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be thine!

Apostles' Creed                                 (Pastor & Congregation)

God has made us his people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith:

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church                        (Pastor & WA)

(P): We cry to you for help, O God, praying for the church, the world, and all those who are in need. A brief silence.

(W): Gracious Heavenly Father, we give you thanks that we have been justified through faith and we have peace with you through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Grant us the hope that comes with this amazing knowledge of reconciliation with you. We pray for the world to accept the good news that we are saved by your grace and are set free to live fully for you alone. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Merciful God, forgive us, renew us, and heal us for the sake of your beloved son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. May we boldly confess your truth in all the world, so others may come to know you. Let us walk by faith and share that faith with we meet. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Father God, you pour out your Holy Spirit upon us to pursue peace and unity. Let us be a beacon of light to guide others toward your unwavering love. We pray for all who struggle in this world, especially those who live in war torn countries, or places where freedom is not a reality. May they find solace in your promise of eternal peace with you. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Lord, Almighty Healer, we pray for all those who are sick, whether at home or in the hospital. Guide their hearts and minds as they begin the healing process; that they are comforted to know you are there with them and you know their every need. We pray for their healing restoration to be rooted in their faith and love for you. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(P): Now is the acceptable time to offer our prayers to you, God of grace and truth. Receive them in your mercy, and grant us all that we need, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer                              (Pastor)

Let us pray the prayer our Savior taught us…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing                                            (Pastor)

The blessing of God Almighty, the wisdom and power of Christ Jesus, and the light of the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Dismissal                                          (Worship Assistant)

Go in peace. Remember those who are suffering and poor. Thanks be to God.

Sending Hymn “In the Cross of Christ I Glory”      LBW # 104, vs 1 – 4

In the cross of Christ I glory, Tow'ring o'er the wrecks of time. All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime.

When the woes of life o'ertake me, Hopes deceive, and fears annoy, Never shall the cross forsake me; Lo, it glows with peace and joy.

When the sun of bliss is beaming Light and love upon my way, From the cross the radiance streaming Adds more luster to the day.

Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, By the cross are sanctified; Peace is there that knows no measure, Joys that through all time abide.
