Gathering Hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth” LBW # 561, vs 1 - 5
For the beauty of the earth, For the
beauty of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies:
Refrain: Christ, our
Lord, to you we raise This our sacrifice of praise.
For the wonder of each
hour Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale and
tree and flow'r, Sun and moon and stars of light: (Refrain)
For the joy of ear and
eye, For the heart and mind’s delight, For the mystic harmony Linking sense to
sound and sight: (Refrain)
For the joy of human love, Brother,
sister, parent, child, Friends on earth and friends above; For all gentle
thoughts and mild: (Refrain)
For yourself, best gift divine To the world so freely giv'n; Agent
of God's grand design, Peace on earth and joy in heav'n:
(Refrain)
Confession & Forgiveness (Pastor)
Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, one God, who
spoke light into creation, who calls us to listen and follow, who sends us to
shine like stars. Amen.
Let us come before God, confessing our sin…
Holy and merciful God, we confess that we have sinned
against our sisters and brothers and against you. We cherish the values of this
world. We cause others to stumble. The earth is wounded by our excess. Have
mercy, O God. Forgive us, renew us, and raise us up on eagle’s wings, that we
may do your will with courage and delight. Amen.
Hear the voice from heave: “You are my own, my
beloved.” God gives power to the weary and strengthens the powerless. Be
cleansed, be healed, for in the name of Jesus Christ, I declare to you the
forgiveness of your sins and the revealing of God’s reign. Amen.
Greeting (Pastor)
The grace of Jesus Christ, the mercy of the Holy One, and the
Spirit of the living God be with you all. And
also with you.
Kyrie (Worship
Assistant)
In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For
the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord,
have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of
the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord,
have mercy. For this
holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to
the Lord. Lord, have mercy.
Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.
Canticle of
Praise “Glory to God…” (Worship
Assistant)
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s
people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God
and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away
the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the
Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the
Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with
the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Prayer of the
Day (Pastor)
First Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-20 (Worship
Assistant)
Though the Word was rare and visions were few, the Lord sought Samuel by
speaking repeatedly to him in the night. Samuel did not yet know the voice of
the Lord. Even though at first Samuel had trouble recognizing who was speaking
to him, Eli eventually discerned that God was calling out for his young
servant.
1The boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the
presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no
frequent vision. 2At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow
dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. 3The
lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of
the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4Then the Lord called Samuel,
and he said, “Here I am!” 5and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for
you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6And the Lord called
again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you
called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7Now
Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been
revealed to him. 8And the Lord called Samuel again the third time.
And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli
perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9Therefore Eli said to
Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for
your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in
his place. 10And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times,
“Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” 11Then
the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which
the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12On that day I
will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from
beginning to end. 13And I declare to him that I am about to punish
his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were
blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14Therefore I swear
to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by
sacrifice or offering forever.” 15Samuel lay until morning; then he
opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the
vision to Eli. 16But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.”
And he said, “Here I am.” 17And Eli said, “What was it that he told
you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide
anything from me of all that he told you.” 18So Samuel told him
everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the Lord. Let him do
what seems good to him.” 19And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with
him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20And all Israel
from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord. This
is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.
Psalm: Psalm # 139:1-9 - read responsively (Worship Assistant)
Lord, you have
searched me out and known me; you know my sitting
down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar.
You trace
my journeys and my resting places and are acquainted with all my ways.
Indeed, there
is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether.
You press
upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge
is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it.
Where can I
go then from your Spirit? where can I flee from your presence?
If I climb up
to heaven, you are there; if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.
If I take
the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there
your hand will lead me and your right hand hold me
fast.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (Worship
Assistant)
Paul maintained that all things were lawful for him
because he was freed from the law by faith in Christ. But the fact that
something is lawful does not make it helpful. His point was that we are to
protect and care for our bodies, minds, and lives because we were bought with a
price; one that cannot be squandered in vain.
12“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are
helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by
anything. 13“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”
— and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual
immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14And God
raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15Do you not
know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of
Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16Or do you not
know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as
it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17But he who is
joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18Flee from sexual immorality.
Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral
person sins against his own body. 19Or do you not know that your
body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are
not your own, 20for you were bought with a price. So
glorify God in your body. This is the Word of
God, word of life, thanks be to God.
Holy Gospel: John 1:43-51 (Pastor)
The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 1st
Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.
The day after Jesus told Andrew and his brother Simon
to “come and see,” he called Philip to follow him. Philip then reported to
Nathanael that they had found the one the prophets wrote about. Philip told him
to “come and see.” Jesus told them all that they would see heaven open and the
angels coming to the Son of Man.
43The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found
Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from
Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael
and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and
also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46Nathanael
said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him,
“Come and see.” 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of
him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael
said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called
you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49Nathanael
answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus
answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you
believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to
him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of
God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” This is the gospel of the
Lord, praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day “When Peace Like a River” LBW # 346, vs. 1 - 4
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way; When sorrows, like sea billows, roll; Whatever
my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is
well with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials
should come, Let this blest assurance control, That
Christ hath regarded my helpless estate And hath shed his own blood for my
soul.
He lives - oh, the bliss of this
glorious thought; My sin, not in part, but the whole, Is
nailed to his cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O
my soul!
And, Lord, haste the day when our faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trumpet shall
sound, and the Lord shall descend; Even so it is well with my soul.
Nicene
Creed (Pastor)
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God
from God, Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and
glorified. He has spoken through the
prophets. We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one
Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We
look for the resurrection of the dead, and
the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers
of the Church (Pastor
& WA)
(P): As God’s beloved
people made radiant by the light of Christ, let us pray for the church, the
whole human family, and God’s good creation. A brief silence.
(W): Lord
God, you call us into a life of discipleship as one body in Christ; you invite
us to follow you in obedience. Refresh us daily with your word, so we may lead
others to you. Thank you for the promise of your Holy Spirit to guide and give
us spiritual insight into your true nature. May we continue to build up the
body of Christ and serve the world in His holy name. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
(W): Loving
Father, we pray for unity in the church. May our interactions with one another
be full of grace and mercy as we continue your holy work in the world. Let us
approach each other with humble and gentle hearts, so all people may come to
know you. Help us to build each other up in love just as you have shown us
through the gift of your son, Jesus Christ. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
(W): Almighty
God of wisdom and strength, we pray for our federal, state, local and world
leaders. Supply them with strength, wisdom, and integrity, so they seek truth
to understand and to resolve differences in peaceful ways. Fill us with the
power of the Holy Spirit, and guide us in this life
that is filled with so many concerns. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
(W): Heavenly
Father, we come to you at all times and in all ways
seeking healing and restoration. Lord, grant us mercy in sickness, that we may feel
your presence. We pray today for those who are affected by illness, may they be
sustained by your promise of everlasting life through our Savior Jesus Christ. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
(P): Holy God, we lift
our prayers to you in hope, entrusting all for whom we pray to your great
goodness and mercy, made known to us in Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer (Pastor)
Let us pray the prayer our Savior
taught us…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against
us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing (Pastor)
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with
grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen.
Dismissal (Worship Assistant)
Go in peace. Christ is with you. Thanks be to God.
Sending Hymn “Jesus
Calls Us; O’er Tumult” LBW # 494, vs 1 –
5
Jesus calls us; o'er the tumult Of our life's wild, restless sea, Day by day his clear voice
sounding, Saying, "Christian, follow me."
As of old St. Andrew heard it By the
Galilean lake, Turned from home and toil and kindred, Leaving
all for his dear sake.
Jesus calls us from the worship Of the vain world's golden store, From each idol that would
keep us, Saying "Christian, love me more."
In our joys and in our sorrows, Days of
toil and hours of ease, Still he calls, in cares and
pleasures, "Christian, love me more than these."
Jesus calls us! In your mercy, Savior,
make us hear your call, Give our hearts to your
obedience, Serve and love you best of all.
