Prelude                                              Meditation on “Break Bread Together”

Welcome and Announcements            Pastor John

Gathering Hymn “For All the Saints…”   LBW # 174, vs 1 - 6

For all the saints who from their labors rest, All who by faith before the world confessed, Your name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

You were their rock, their fortress, and their might; You, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; You, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Oh, may your soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old And win with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine, We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one within your great design. Alleluia! Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Confession & Forgiveness                  (Pastor)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Greeting                                            (Pastor)

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Kyrie                                                (Worship Assistant)

In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.

Canticle of Praise  “Glory to God…” (Worship Assistant)

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day                               (Pastor)

Let us pray…Heavenly Father, whether we have little or much, help us to always live open-handed in a tight-fisted world; and to find our greatest joy in following and serving you. We dedicate all we are and all we have to you on this day as living sacrifices. Amen.

First Reading: 1 Chronicles 16:8-36   (Worship Assistant)

This is David’s “Song of Thanks” to God. While listening to this passage, reflect on the specific examples of His mercy in your life and give thanks to God. For His steadfast love, which He professes to us through His beloved Son, truly endures forever.

8Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 9Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! 10Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! 11Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually! 12Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered, 13O offspring of Israel his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones! 14He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth. 15Remember his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, 16the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, 17which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, 18saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan, as your portion for an inheritance.” 19When you were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it, 20wandering from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people, 21he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account, 22saying, “Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!”

23Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day. 24Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! 25For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods.26For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens. 27Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place. 28Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! 29Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; 30tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. 31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!” 32Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! 33Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. 34Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

35Say also: Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. 36Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting!”

Then all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord. This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

Psalm: Psalm # 111 - read responsively   (Worship Assistant)

God is Israel’s help in times of trouble, fully present, creating a fortress around the house of Jacob. Though kingdoms will rise and fall, nothing will keep the Lord of Hosts away from his beloved people.

Praise the Lord!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.

Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.

He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merciful.

He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.

He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the inheritance of the nations.

The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy;

they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name!

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!

Second Reading: 1 Peter 4:1-11          (Worship Assistant)

Christ suffered in the flesh and became sin in our stead. He now calls us to live the new life He has given us as stewards of His gifts. Everything we have, even our lives, are used to benefit the Church and our neighbor. Through our words and action, we bring Christ to a world that is dead in sin so that some may come alive in Christ, even as we have been made alive.

1Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless +idolatry. With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies - in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. This is the Word of God, word of life, thanks be to God.

*Holy Gospel: Matthew 16:24-28       (Pastor)

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 16th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

Talk of suffering and death, taking up one’s cross, and losing one’s life sounds strange and foreboding to Jesus’ disciples. It does to us too. Yet the end is not the cross; the end is life in God’s kingdom. To live in His kingdom must be our ultimate purpose. Many of the first disciples saw the glorious unveiling of the Kingdom when Christ rose from the dead. Peter saw the fulfillment of the promise on Pentecost. We continue to behold the spread of the message of Christ’s cross into all the world.

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” This is the gospel of the Lord, praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon                                             Pastor John

*Hymn of the Day “Rise, O Children of Salvation” LBW # 182 vs. 1 - 4

Rise, O children of salvation, All who cleave to Christ the head. Wake, awake, O mighty nation, Lest the foe on Zion tread; He draws nigh, and would defy All the hosts of God Most High.

Saints and martyrs long before us Firmly on this ground have stood; See their banner waving o’er us, Conqu'rors through the Savior’s blood. Ground we hold, whereon of old Fought the faithful and the bold.

Fighting, we shall be victorious By the blood of Christ our Lord; On our foreheads, bright and glorious, Shines the witness of his Word; Spear and shield on battlefield, His great name; we cannot yield.

When his servants stand before him, Each receiving his reward; When his saints in light adore him, Giving glory to the Lord; "Victory!" our song shall be, Like the thunder of the sea.

Apostle’s Creed

Let us join together in confessing our faith with the saints who have gone before us, in the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church                        (Worship Assistant)

(P): Remembering the saints who have gone before us and giving thanks for God’s blessings, we pray for the church, all in need, and God’s good creation. A brief silence.

(W): Lord of heaven and earth, keep your church attentive and faithful that she may be ready for that day when your redemptive work is complete and all things will be made new in Christ.   Bless those who are merciful, patient, long-suffering, and giving, that the kingdom may be ours. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Eternal God, we give you thanks for all who lived and died believing in your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you for the memories we share of loved ones whose lives have touched our own; memories that are precious gifts from your most gracious hand. Give us grace to trust your Word and your promise of eternal life, together with those who have gone before us, and have encouraged us by the witness of their lives of faith. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): God of peace, war and violence threaten to destroy the peace and well-being that you desire for your people. Strengthen and sustain those who seek to bring an end to violence and war and those who live in war-torn areas. Bring an end to riots, hatred, and anger. Open our mouths to speak words of peace, love and justice, when necessary. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Merciful One, look with compassion on your children who are still learning about your never-ending power, love, and mercy. Bring strength and peace to those who need it most. Remind us again that this life is not all there is; that through your Son, death has been conquered and new life will be given. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(P): Receive our prayers and hopes, Good Shepherd, and bring us safely into all joy and peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray the prayer our Savior taught us…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing                                            (Pastor)

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen.

Dismissal                                          (Worship Assistant)

Go in peace. Christ is with you. Thanks be to God.

Sending Hymn “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name” LBW # 535, vs 1 – 4

Holy God, we praise your name; Lord of all, we bow before you. All on earth your scepter claim, All in heav'n above adore you. Infinite your vast domain, Everlasting is your reign.

Hark! the glad celestial hymn Angel choirs above are raising; Cherubim and seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising, Fill the heav'ns with sweet accord: “Holy, holy, holy Lord!”

Lo, the apostolic train Join your sacred name to hallow; Prophets swell the glad refrain, And the white-robed martyrs follow; And from morn to set of sun Through the Church the song goes on.

Holy Father, holy Son, Holy Spirit, three we name you, Though in essence only one; Undivided God we claim you And, adoring, bend the knee While we own the mystery.
