Reformation Sunday
Questions from the Sermon of Pastor Ray Scheck
Freedom
1.
For you, what
does it mean to be free?
2.
For you, how do
you become free? What has helped you to be free?
3.
If someone would
ask you your freedom story, what would you share with them?
4.
How do you remember
the story of the evil one tempting Eve and Adam in Genesis, chapter 3?
The Story from Genesis, chapter 3, verses 1-5
1.
Really…You won’t die, the serpent hissed. God knows that your eyes will
be opened when you eat it. You will become just like God, knowing everything
both good and bad.
2.
Martin Luther: Satan,
the world, and our sinful nature tell us we don’t need
God to be free.
Our Gospel Story of John, chapter 8
1.
You are truly my
disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And then you will know the
truth and the truth will set you free.
2.
Have you
discovered you can only be free if you have Jesus in your life and you seek his
truths of freedom?
Our First Reading from the Book of Revelation, chapter 14, verses 6-7
1.
Fear God
2.
Give Glory to God
3.
Worship God
Our Second Reading from the book of Romans, chapter 7, verses 21-25
1.
And as I have
discovered this principle of life, that when I want to do what is right, I
inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is
another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a
slave to sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am.
2.
Who will free me
from this life dominated by sin and death? Thank God – the answer is in Christ
Jesus our Lord.
Back to chapter 3 of Romans
1.
Verse 20: For no
one can be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply
shows us how sinful we are.
2.
Verse 22: We are
made right with God (and yes have the freedom only Jesus can give us) by
placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes,
no matter who we are.
What’s our freedom stories…
