Prelude                                              Meditation on “Gethsemane”

Welcome and Announcements            Pastor John

Gathering Hymn “Chief of Sinners…”        LBW # 306, vs 1 – 5

Chief of sinners though I be, Jesus shed his blood for me, Died that I might live on high, Lived that I might never die. As the branch is to the vine, I am his and he is mine.

Oh, the height of Jesus' love! Higher than the heav'ns above, Deeper than the depths of sea, Lasting as eternity. Love that found me - wondrous thought - Found me when I sought him not.

Only Jesus can impart Balm to heal the wounded heart, Peace that flows from sin forgiv'n, Joy that lifts the soul to heav'n, Faith and hope to walk with God In the way that Enoch trod.

Chief of sinners though I be, Christ is All-in-All to me; All my wants to him are known, All my sorrows are his own. He sustains the hidden life Safe with him from earthly strife.

O my Savior, help afford By Your Spirit and your Word! When my wayward heart would stray, Keep me in the narrow way; Grace in time of need supply While I live and when I die.

Confession & Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen.

God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Kyrie

In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.

Canticle of Praise  “Glory to God…”

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray…O Lord, help your people to avoid the infection of the evil one, and with pure hearts to follow you, our only Lord. Grant this, we pray, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading                                      Genesis 50:15-21

After the death of Jacob their father, Joseph’s brothers continued to look out for themselves by coming up with a plan to procure Joseph’s forgiveness for their prior betrayal of him. Joseph, despite what he had suffered, was able to see God at work for good, even when his brothers’ intentions and actions were evil.

15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” 16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: 17‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

Psalm # 103:1-12

The psalmist sang of the God of forgiveness and praised him for his ways throughout the history of Israel. God’s steadfast love covers our sins and brings justice for the oppressed. His love for us is as high as the heavens!

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

He forgives all your sins and heals all your infirmities;

He redeems your life from the grave and crowns you with mercy and lovingkindness;

He satisfies you with good things, and your youth is renewed like an eagle’s.

The Lord executes righteousness and judgment for all who are oppressed.

He made his ways known to Moses and his works to the children of Israel.

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness.

He will not always accuse us, nor will he keep his anger forever.

He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our wickedness.

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so is his mercy great upon those who fear him.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from us.

Second Reading                                 Romans 14:1-12

Paul taught the Roman Christians that people express their faith in ways that might be different from one another. One may eat meat while another refrains from eating meat. One may observe a day as special while another sees it as any other day. This is done by faith; personal piety is not meant to be judged as we all live unto the Lord.

1As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” 12So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. This is the Word of God, word of life, thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel                                       Matthew 18:21-35

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 18th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Peter posed a question to Jesus about the number of times one offers forgiveness to those who have done wrong. Jesus’ parable reminds us that we are all sinners in need of forgiveness. To withhold such a blessing from others is to fail to appreciate the true meaning of having our own debts wiped away.

21Peter came up and said to Jesus, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” This is the gospel of the Lord, praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon                                             Pastor John

Hymn of the Day “Take My Life, That I May Be” LBW # 406, vs 1 – 6

Take my life, that I may be Consecrated, Lord, to thee; Take my moments and my days; Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of thy love; Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for thee.

Take my voice and let me sing Always, only, for my King; Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from thee.

Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I withhold; Take my intellect, and use Ev'ry pow'r as thou shalt choose.

Take my will and make it thine; It shall be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is thine own; It shall be thy royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour At thy feet its treasure store; Take myself, and I will be Ever, only, all for thee.

Apostle’s Creed

Let us join together in confessing our faith with the saints who have gone before us, in the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

(P): With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. A brief silence.

(W): God of love, you have forgiven us of our sins, known and unknown and restored us to a right relationship with you through Christ. Help us to forgive others who have hurt or disappointed us, that we may be freed from the suffering of holding a grudge and they might know your grace. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

(W): God of the harvest, bless farmers who gather their crops from the fields, and great them great bounty that all might share in the goodness and abundance of the earth. Keep them safe as they operate heavy machinery and work long hours. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

(W): God of Light, bring your comfort and protection to all those who are away from home - either at school, college, in the military, or away for work. Watch over them and return them home safely when their tasks are completed. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

(W): Bring peace of mind and heart, and wholeness and healing of body and spirit, to all who suffer from any illness or distress. Grant them a sense of your constant presence through those who care for them. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

(P): Trusting in your mercy and goodness, we bring before you these prayers in the name of the one who sets us free, Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray the prayer our Savior taught us…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen.

Dismissal

Go in peace. Christ is with you. Thanks be to God.

Sending Hymn  Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus” LBW # 389, vs 1 – 4

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, As soldiers of the cross, Lift high his royal banner; It must not suffer loss. From vict'ry unto vict'ry His army he shall lead, Till ev'ry foe is vanquished And Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus; The trumpet call obey; Stand forth in mighty conflict In this his glorious day. Let all his faithful serve him Against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger, And strength to strength oppose.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, Stand in his strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, You dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor; Each piece put on with prayer. Where duty calls or danger, Be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, The strife will not be long; This day the din of battle, The next the victor's song. The soldiers, overcoming, Their crown of life shall see, And with the King of glory Shall reign eternally.
