Prelude                                             Meditation on “Ville du Havre”

Welcome and Announcements            Pastor John

Gathering Hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” LBW # 293, vs 1 – 4

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; No merit of my own I claim, But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

(Refrain): On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; In ev'ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil. (Refrain)

His oath, his covenant, his blood Sustain me in the raging flood; When all supports are washed away, He then is all my hope and stay. (Refrain)

When he shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in him be found, Clothed in his righteousness alone, Redeemed to stand before the throne! (Refrain)

Confession & Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen.

God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Kyrie

In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.

Canticle of Praise  “Glory to God…”

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray…Almighty and merciful God, only by your gift of grace can the faithful offer service that is worthy of you and deserving of praise. Keep us from stumbling as we run to receive your promises; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading                                      Job 38:4-18

God invites Israel to a grand banquet at which all will eat at no cost, promising an everlasting covenant with the entire nation that includes promises previously extended only to kings and their descendants. In response, Israel shall serve as a witness to all nations concerning the glory of God.

4“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding. 5Who determined its measurements — surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, 7when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, 9when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, 11and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’? 12Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, 13that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it? 14It is changed like clay under the seal, and its features stand out like a garment. 15From the wicked their light is withheld, and their uplifted arm is broken. 16Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep? 17Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? 18Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this.” This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

Psalm # 18:1-16

The psalmist praises the Lord for being his strength and deliverer. Even though he was near death when he cried out to God, he was rescued from Sheol. The God of salvation is the psalmist’s rock and fortress, his shelter from the storms of life.

I love you, O Lord my strength, O Lord my stronghold, my crag, and my haven.

My God, my rock in whom I put my trust, my shield, the horn of my salvation, and my refuge: You are worthy of praise.

I will call upon the Lord, and so shall I be saved from my enemies.

The breakers of death rolled over me, and the torrents of oblivion made me afraid.

The cords of hell entangled me, and the snares of death were set for me.

I called upon the Lord in my distress and cried out to my God for help.

He heard my voice from his heavenly dwelling; my cry of anguish came to his ears.

The earth reeled and rocked; the roots of the mountains shook; they reeled because of his anger.

Smoke rose from his nostrils and a consuming fire out of his mouth; hot burning coals blazed forth from him.

He parted the heavens and came down with a storm cloud under his feet.

He mounted on cherubim and flew; he swooped on the wings of the wind.

He wrapped darkness about him; he made dark waters and thick clouds his pavilion.

From the brightness of his presence, through the clouds, burst hailstones and coals of fire.

The Lord thundered out of heaven; the Most High uttered his voice.

He loosed his arrows and scattered them; he hurled thunderbolts and routed them.

The beds of the seas were uncovered, and the foundations of the world laid bare, at your battle cry, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

He reached down from on high and grasped me; he drew me out of great waters.

Second Reading                                 Romans 10:5-17

St. Paul teaches the Roman Christians about faith in Christ, saying that if one believes from the heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, that person will be saved. This good news goes out to any who believe, for there are no distinctions between Jew and Greek. Simply by calling on the name of the Lord, one is saved.

5Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7“or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. This is the Word of God, word of life, thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel                                       Matthew 14: 22-33

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 14th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

Immediately after Jesus feeds five thousand men, plus women and children, he sends his disciples across to the other side of the lake. Jesus sends the crowds away and goes to the mountain to pray. Soon after, the disciples’ boat is battered by a storm. Jesus approaches the boat on the water and calls out to them.

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 28And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” This is the gospel of the Lord, praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon                                             Pastor John

Hymn of the Day “When Peace Like a River” LBW # 346, vs 1 – 4

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way; When sorrows, like sea billows, roll; Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate And hath shed his own blood for my soul.

He lives - oh, the bliss of this glorious thought; My sin, not in part, but the whole, Is nailed to his cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when our faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trumpet shall sound, and the Lord shall descend; Even so it is well with my soul.

Apostle’s Creed

Let us join together in confessing our faith with the saints who have gone before us, in the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

(P): Filled by the Spirit, let us join the whole people of God in Jesus Christ in praying for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. A brief silence.

(W): Holy God, speak to us out of the whirlwind of this life. You know how we are battered and tossed around about the winds of change, the secular culture in which we live, and the pressures to conform to the ways of the world. Strengthen our resolve to follow Jesus in obedience to your will, and open our ears to hear you calling our names and sending us in yours. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Loving God, your creation is such a magnificent work of art. Help us to appreciate your handiwork and to stand in awe of all that you have formed. Let us delight in all of the species of plants and animals and marvel at the sight of mountains and seas, as we praise your name in all the earth. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Healing God, we ask your tender care to be with those who are suffering this day in mind, body or spirit. You know the needs of each person you have made, even before we do ourselves. Please attend to the needs of all who are in trouble, facing trials, or are struggling with sickness. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Faithful Lord, you always tell your people, “Have no fear!” and yet we struggle with being afraid. Help us to put our complete trust in you, that we would have peace and courage, even when we are afraid, that trusting in you we would have the sure confidence of your abiding strength and love. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(P): Into your loving hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your abundant mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray the prayer our Savior taught us…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen.

Dismissal

Go in peace. Christ is with you. Thanks be to God.

Sending Hymn  Eternal Father, Strong to Save” LBW # 467, vs 1 – 4

Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm has bound the restless wave, Who bade the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep: Oh, hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea.

O Savior, whose almighty word The winds and waves submissive heard, Who walked upon the foaming deep, And calm amid the storm didst sleep: Oh, hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea.

O Holy Spirit, who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, And bid its angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace: Oh, hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea.

O Trinity of love and pow'r, All trav'lers guard in danger's hour From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them where-so-e'er they go; Thus evermore shall rise to thee Glad hymns and praise from land and sea.
