Prelude                                             Meditation on “Converse”

Welcome and Announcements            Pastor John

Gathering Hymn “Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” LBW # 559, vs 1 – 5

Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer's praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of his grace!

My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The honors of your name.

The name of Jesus charms our fears And bids our sorrows cease, Sings music in the sinner's ears, Brings life and health and peace.

He breaks the pow'r of canceled sin; He sets the pris'ner free. His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood avails for me.

To God all glory, praise, and love Be now and ever giv'n By saints below and saints above, The Church in earth and heav'n.

Confession & Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen.

God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Kyrie

In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.  Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.

Canticle of Praise  “Glory to God…”

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray…Almighty, eternal God, increase in us your gifts of faith, hope and love; and in order that love may abide in us, help us to celebrate what your love has done for us. Grant this, we pray, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading                                      Isaiah 56:1, 6-8

The prophet speaks the Word of the Lord, saying that God’s house is to be a house of prayer. This means that those who follow the Lord’s commands will be blessed; their offerings will be considered acceptable.

1Thus says the Lord: “Keep justice, and do righteousness, for soon my salvation will come, and my righteousness be revealed.”

6And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant — 7these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” 8The Lord God, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares, “I will gather yet others to him besides those already gathered.” This is the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

Psalm # 67

The psalmist asks the Lord to bless the nations and to let his holiness shine on them as he provides a good harvest and judges the people as righteous.

May God be merciful to us and bless us, show us the light of his countenance and come to us.

Let your ways be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations.

Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the nations upon earth.

Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

The earth has brought forth her increase; may God, our own God, give us his blessing.

May God give us his blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him.

Second Reading                                 Romans 11:1-2a, 13-15, 28-32

St. Paul continues his exhortation on the fate of Israel. God, he says, has not rejected his people. Even though they were disobedient and unfaithful, God will not abandon them. Instead, Christ’s death and resurrection opened a way for Gentiles to be included in God’s plan for salvation. The gifts and call that come from God are forever. They are irrevocable because of God’s faithfulness, not ours.

1I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2aGod has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. …

13Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. 15For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?

28As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. 32For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all. This is the Word of God, word of life, thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel                                       Matthew 15:21-28

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 15th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus has just instructed his followers that what is unclean is not what is put into one’s mouth; instead, it’s what comes out of the mouth from the heart. As he goes off to Tyre and Sidon, he is met by a Canaanite woman who, in faith, cries out to him to heal her daughter. He tries to dismiss her because of her ethnicity, but her clever retort about dogs getting crumbs from the table wins Jesus over. Her demon possessed daughter is healed immediately, and Jesus praises the woman’s faith.

21Jesus went away from Gennesaret and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. This is the gospel of the Lord, praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon                                             Pastor John

Hymn of the Day “All People on Earth Do Dwell” LBW # 245, vs 1 – 5

All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell; Come ye before him and rejoice.

Know that the Lord is God indeed; Without our aid he did us make. We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take.

Oh, enter then his gates with praise; Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his name always, For it is seemly so to do.

For why? the Lord our God is good: His mercy is forever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heav'n and earth adore, From us and from the angel host Be praise and glory evermore.

Apostle’s Creed

Let us join together in confessing our faith with the saints who have gone before us, in the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

(P): Filled by the Spirit, let us join the whole people of God in Jesus Christ in praying for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. A brief silence.

(W): Holy God, you are the source of our strength in this life. Be with us in the face of trials and help us to fully rely on you as we struggle through the storms of life. Give us courage to let go of that which we cannot control and trust that you have our best interests in mind always, because of your great love for us. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): Father, we ask that you watch over those who serve in the armed forces and as peace officers in our community. Protect them and bring them home safely to their families. Help them to always serve with gentleness and a clear mind so justice is served for all involved. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): We pray for the Bride of Christ, dear Lord, the holy catholic and apostolic Church. Empower us to follow Jesus with our whole lives and to make disciples of all nations that your name may be praised and honored in all the earth. Be with church leaders and help them lead with integrity and faith, creativity when it is needed, and faithfulness always. Guide them with your Holy Spirit and speak your Word through them to your people. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(W): God of healing, be with all those who are sick or injured and are in the hospital or recuperating at home. Bring strength to their weary bodies and hope to their hearts and minds. We pray for those who are aging and are bound to their homes. Give them good friends to visit with and loved ones to care for them. We remember all those who are suffering this day. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

(P): Into your loving hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your abundant mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray the prayer our Savior taught us…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen.

Dismissal

Go in peace. Christ is with you. Thanks be to God.

Sending Hymn  “Blest Be the Tie that Binds” LBW # 370, vs 1 – 4

Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The unity of heart and mind Is like to that above.

Before our Father’s throne We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one, Our comforts and our cares.

We share our mutual woes, Our mutual burdens bear, And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear.

From sorrow, toil, and pain, And sin we shall be free; And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity.
