Gathering Song “All Hail the Power…” LBW # 328, vs 1 - 4
All hail the power of
Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem, and crown
Him Lord of all. Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all.
Crown him, you martyrs of
our God, Who from his altar call; Extol the stem of
Jesse’s rod And crown him Lord of all. Extol the stem of Jesse’s
rod And crown him Lord of all.
O seed of Israel’s chosen
race, Now ransomed from the fall,
Hail him who saves you by his grace And crown him Lord of all. Hail him who saves you by his
grace And crown him Lord of all.
Hail him, you heirs of
David’s line, Whom David Lord did call, The God Incarnate, man divine, And crown
him Lord of all. The God Incarnate, man divine, And crown him Lord of all.
Confession & Forgiveness
Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who
forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen.
God of all mercy and consolation, come to
the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us
the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your
forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of
God and of one another. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we
have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us
our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to
do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and
serve
you in newness of life through
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even
when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you
have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty
God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in
your hearts through faith. Amen.
Greeting
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the
love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit be with you all. And also with you.
Kyrie
In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord,
have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us
pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace
of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity
of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all
who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord,
have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious
Lord. Amen.
Canticle
of Praise “Glory to God…”
Glory to God in
the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for
your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the
right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Prayer of
the Day
Let us pray…O Lord, our God,
arrange the course of this world that peace may come
and your tranquil Church rejoice through greater service. Grant this, we pray,
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
First Reading: Exodus 19:2-8a
Moses was called up to the
mountain by God who had a message for Israel at the foot of the mountain. God
told Moses to remind His people of what he had done for them in Egypt, that
they are his treasured possession and they will obey his voice. God renewed his
covenant with them and declared them a holy nation.
2The people of Israel set out from Rephidim and came
into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel
encamped before the mountain, 3while Moses went up to God. The Lord
called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of
Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4‘You yourselves have seen
what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought
you to myself. 5Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and
keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for
all the earth is mine; 6and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests
and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of
Israel.” 7So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set
before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8All
the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will
do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord. This is the word
of the Lord, thanks
be to God.
Psalm: Psalm # 100
The
psalmist urged the people to be joyful for the Lord himself made them his sheep
and they belong to him. God’s goodness and mercy are everlasting, and his
faithfulness endures forever.
Be joyful in
the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness
and come before his presence with a song.
Know this:
The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his
people and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his
gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and
call upon his Name.
For the
Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age
to age.
Second Reading: Romans 5:6-15
God shows his love for us in that even though we were
stricken by sin and chained by death, Jesus died on the cross for the unworthy.
Through Jesus we have been reconciled to the Father, and so we have reason to
rejoice and be exceedingly glad.
6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ
died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous
person —
though perhaps for a good person one would dare even
to die — 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still
sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since, therefore, we have now been
justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of
God. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the
death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by
his life. 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord
Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 12Therefore,
just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so
death spread to all men because all sinned — 13for sin indeed was in
the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no
law. 14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose
sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who
was to come. 15But the free gift is not
like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have
the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one
man Jesus Christ abounded for many. This is the Word of God, word of
life, thanks be to God.
Holy Gospel: The
Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 9th and 10th Chapters.
Glory to you, O Lord. Matthew 9:35-10:20: As Jesus
made his way around the countryside, he came across many who were
in need of healing and compassion. He gathered and cared for them like a
Good Shepherd and taught his disciples to do the same. After he called the
disciples to follow him, Jesus gave them authority to heal and cast out demons
in his name. He instructed them to take nothing with them but to rely on the
goodness of those they meet along the way. In this way, they learned to trust
in God’s provision.
35Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages,
teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing
every disease and every affliction. 36When he saw the crowds, he had
compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep
without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is
plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore pray earnestly to
the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
1And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave
them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every
disease and every affliction. 2The names of the twelve apostles are
these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son
of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas
and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon
the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5These twelve
Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no
town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the
house of Israel. 7And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of
heaven is at hand.’ 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers,
cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. 9Acquire
no gold nor silver nor copper for your belts, 10no bag for your
journey, nor two tunics nor sandals nor a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.
11And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in
it and stay there until you depart. 12As you enter the house, greet
it. 13And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but
if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14And if anyone
will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet
when you leave that house or town. 15Truly, I say to you, it will be
more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than
for that town. 16Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent
as doves. 17Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts
and flog you in their synagogues, 18and you will be dragged before
governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19When
they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are
to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20For
it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” This
is the gospel of the Lord, praise to
you, O Christ.
Sermon Pastor
John
Hymn of the Day “Take My Life…” LBW # 406,
vs 1 - 4
Take my life, that I may be Consecrated,
Lord, to thee. Take my moments and my days, Let them
flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands and let them move At
the impulse of thy love. Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for thee.
Take my voice and let me sing Always, only, for my King. Take
my lips and let them be Filled with messages from thee.
Take my silver and my gold, Not a
mite would I withhold; Take my intellect and use Ev’ry
pow’r as thou shalt choose.
We
believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We
believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God
from God, Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We
believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and
glorified. He has spoken through the
prophets. We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one
Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We
look for the resurrection of the dead, and
the life of the world to come. Amen.
Prayers of the Church:
(P): Strengthened by
the Spirit who gives us words to speak and hearts that care, let us bring our
hopes and needs to God who listens. A brief silence.
(W): Shepherding God, you know us by name and you protect us in all things. Give us ears to hear
the voice of the Good Shepherd, Jesus, calling us to follow him in obedience,
trust, and joy. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
(W): Holy One-in-Three, in the midst of all the changes of this world, you are the
One who is eternal. Your Son Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and
tomorrow. As the world continues to struggle with disease, strife, and hunger,
grant us a deeper faith in you. Keep us alert for your coming among us once
again on the last day. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.
(W): God of compassion, in times of weeping and mourning,
when we are ill or suffering, we wait upon your mercy, trusting that you will
never forget us. Give hope to all who wait in patience and faith. Be with them
in their time of need, and remind them of your promise, that neither height or depth,
death or life, nor anything else in all of creation, will be able to separate
us from your love in Christ Jesus. Lord in your
mercy, hear our prayer.
(P):
We lift our prayers to you, God of mercy, confident that all things are in your
hands. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Lord, remember us in Your kingdom
and teach us to pray…Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this
day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing:
The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with
favor and give you peace. Amen.
Dismissal: (WA)
Go in peace. Christ is with you. Thanks
be to God.
